500개 직업군 분석했더니…‘암 사망률’ 1위는 승무원?_我的网站

一 |     승무원 6.9%·조종사 6.7%                   승무원은 근무 환경으로 인해 우주방사선에 반복적으로 노출된다. 사진=게티이미지뱅크항공기 승무원이 500개 넘는 직업 가운데 방사선 관련 암으로 사망할 위험이 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 우주방사선에 반복적으로 노출되는 근무 환경이 영향을 줄 수 있기 때문이다. 미국 하버드대 의과대학과 매사추세츠종합병원 등 공동연구팀이 500개가 넘는 직업군의 사망 자료를 분석했더니 방사선 관련 암으로 사망할 위험이 가장 높은 직업은 항공 승무원과 조종사였다. 해당 연구는 최근 국제학술지《미국의사협회 내과학회지(JAMA Internal Medicine)》에 발표됐다. 승무원 사망 6.9%가 방사선 관련 암연구진은 2020~2024년 미국 사망진단서 약 1천271만 건을 분석했다. 503개 직업군을 비교한 결과 방사선 관련 암 사망 비율은 항공기 승무원이 6.9%로 가장 높았고, 조종사가 6.7%로 뒤를 이었다.연구진은 방사선과 관련이 있다고 알려진 암으로 백혈병과 림프종, 다발성골수종, 갑상선암, 유방암, 뇌종양, 전립선암, 흑색종 등을 분류했다. 연령과 성별, 인종, 교육 수준, 결혼 여부 등을 고려한 뒤에도 승무원과 조종사에서 방사선 관련 암 사망 비율이 높게 나타났다.하늘로 올라갈수록 우주방사선 많아져비행 중 승무원이 노출되는 방사선은 병원에서 사용하는 엑스레이와는 다르다. 우주에서 날아오는 우주방사선이다. 우주방사선은 태양과 은하계에서 날아오는 고에너지 입자다.지상에서는 사람과 우주 사이에 두꺼운 대기층이 있어 우주방사선이 상당 부분 걸러진다. 하지만 비행기는 지상보다 훨씬 높은 곳을 날기 때문에 방사선을 막아주는 대기의 양이 줄어든다. 따라서 비행 중에는 지상보다 우주방사선 노출량이 많아진다.국제방사선방호위원회는 항공기 승무원을 직업적으로 우주방사선에 노출되는 집단으로 분류한다. 노출량은 비행 고도와 시간, 항공 노선의 위도, 태양 활동 등에 따라 달라지는데, 고도가 높고 극지방에 가까운 노선을 오래 운항할수록 방사선량이 증가한다.반복적 노출…세포 DNA 손상승무원은 비행고도에서 수백 시간씩 근무하면서 우주방사선에 반복적으로 노출된다. 항공 승무원의 연간 우주방사선 노출량은 노선과 근무시간에 따라 다르지만 대략 3~6밀리시버트(mSv)로 추정된다.방사선은 한 번에 많은 양을 받는 경우뿐 아니라, 적은 양이라도 반복적으로 노출될 때 문제가 될 수 있다. 특히 이온화 방사선은 세포를 통과하면서 DNA에 손상을 줄 수 있다.우리 몸은 손상된 DNA를 대부분 복구한다. 그러나 손상이 반복되거나 복구 과정에서 오류가 생기면 세포의 성장과 분열을 조절하는 기능이 망가질 수 있다. 이런 변화가 오랜 기간 축적되면 비정상적인 세포가 증식해 암으로 이어질 가능성이 생긴다.방사선 노출량 확인 어려워…한계다만 이번 연구만으로 비행 중 방사선이 암으로 인한 사망의 직접적인 원인이라고 단정하기는 어렵다. 연구진은 사망 진단서에 기록된 직업과 사망 원인을 비교했을 뿐 개인별 비행 시간이나 운항 고도, 주로 이용한 노선, 근무 기간에 따른 실제 누적 방사선량까지 확인하지 못했다. 승무원과 조종사가 겪는 야간 근무와 시차, 수면 부족, 직업 스트레스, 자외선 노출 등 다른 근무 환경도 암 위험을 높일 수 있다는 분석이다.。
